Tips From The Pros - #1 Bev Johnson
Bev Johnson, SeniorNet Learning Center Coordinator:
- Maintain Security with Windows XP. There are three steps you should take to improve your computer's security. Use an Internet firewall. Get Window's updates, and use up-to-date antivirus software.
- Create a Screensaver From Your Pictures. To create a personal slideshow screensaver in Windows XP, right click an empty spot on the desktop and select Properties. Select the screen saver tab and choose my pictures slideshow from the screen saver list box. Click the Settings button to control how often the pictures change, how large the pictures should be, the location of the pictures, picture transition and more. Click OK. Click OK.
- Ungroup Taskbar Items in Windows XP. By default, Windows XP groups similar taskbar items on the same taskbar button. If you have 6 Word documents open, you'll see a single button that reads "6 Microsoft Word." To represent each document with its own taskbar butt, right click a blank area of the Taskbar and select Properties. On the Taskbar tab of the result dialog box, deselect "Group similar taskbar buttons" and click OK.
- Easy Scrolling. Here's a quick little trick with MS Internet Explorer's scroll bar. Rather than grabbing the scroll bar to scroll down the length of a web page, right click the scrollbar. A menu will pop up that's full of scrolling options.
- What is a Virus: A virus is an unwanted program that may be installed on your computer through an email attachment. Some viruses try to crash your computer or spread the virus around to individuals in your address book. Attachments ending with ".exe", ".com", ".ini", ".vbs", or ".zip" pose a greater virus risk than other file extensions such as ".txt", ".wps", "doc", ".gif", ".jpg". The best rule of thumb is this: "If you don't know the send of the email message, don't open the message; just delete it."
- Easy borders. Here's an easy way to add an attractive border to your Word documents. To create a double-line border, just type 3 equal signs and press the Enter key. To get a dotted-line border, type 3 asterisks and press the Enter key. To get a zig-zag border, type 3 pound signs and press the Enter key. To get a fancier line border, type 3 tildes () and press the Enter key.
- Close pop-up windows. In Internet Explorer, pop-up windows often appear with the Close button hanging off the screen. You can close these windows easily by pressing Alt + F4.
- Coloring fun. Here's a Web site that will entertain the younger grandkids. Go to www.coloring.com. Clink on a link to select a picture to color. Select a color and then click in the area of the picture you want to color.
